Deer heads and game heads

Never cut an animal's throat or anywhere past it's front legs. If you skin your trophy, hang it by the back legs. The incision on the chest should stop approximately 5 inches behind the back of the front legs. Split the animal's front legs down the center of the back, where white and brown hair meet. Continue these incisions to meet the chest incision, forming a Y. After splitting the back legs, the entire animal may be skinned without any further cuts on the animal's front half.

After skinning down to the head, cut the neck with a meat saw. You will now have the head and entire skin with it.

Spoilage can occur quickly during warm weather, fifty degrees and above. The head should be put in cold storage, frozen, or brought to us immediately.

There have been many problems arising from the use of meat coolers for aging deer skin on. Your deer should be skinned for mounting within 3 days after hanging. The aging process of meat may cause hair roots to loosen and slippage of hair and top layer skin occur, thus losing your trophy to decay. When hanging deer, you must hang your deer by the horns to allow drainage from the body cavity.

Fish should be wrapped in a wet towel, sealed in a plastic bag frozen

Birds should be wrapped in dry paper towels, sealed in a plastic bag and frozen

Animals to be mounted life size should be sealed in a plastic bag and frozen
